XIV RESEARCH WORKSHOP ON INSTITUTIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS

The study of institutional environments and organizational arrangements has been developed traditionally by different disciplines. For a long time, economists, sociologists, management scholars and political scientists have devoted efforts in the study of institutions and organizations. These efforts, however, have been conducted almost independently through different theoretical lenses. For instance, while scholars associated with organizational economics have largely focused on formal mechanisms to govern exchanges (such as explicit contracts and hierarchies), sociologists and other social theorists have stressed the role of informal mechanisms including trust-based networks, political relations, and social-cognitive processes.

Being interdisciplinary in nature, the Research Workshop on Institutions and Organizations (RWIO) is a joint endeavor led by five research-oriented schools in Brazil (University of São Paulo – USP, Presbiterian Mackenzie University, Insper, Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul – UFMS,  and Federal University of São Carlos – UFSCar). The aim of the workshop is to bring together researchers from distinct academic traditions to discuss relevant issues of institutions and organizations. Although the Workshop is jointly organized by five schools in Brazil, the organizers encourage the participation of scholars from all over the country, as well as from abroad.

The XIV RWIO will be divided in two parts:

In the first part of the event, a group of senior researchers will present their ogoing research projects. Each presentation will be followed by a plenary debate in which the audience is expected to participate actively. The aim of the discussions is to develop an academic exchange environment.

The second part of the event will be organized as paper development sessions. The sessions are targeted at junior faculty, PhD candidates, and advanced master students. The main objective of the workshop is to provide a supportive environment where participants can receive feedback on current research projects and network with scholars.

In its fourteenth edition, the RWIO has a new partnership:

This year the XIV RWIO is jointly organized with XXII SemeAd 2019 (http://semead.com.br/22/) that will also take place at FEA/USP, on November 06th – 08th 2019. The registration enables access to both conferences.

This year the seminar is also sponsoring the 20 hours mini course THE INSTITUTIONS OF CAPITALISM (4–8, November), with professor Geoffrey M. Hodgson (Loughborough University London) (http://cors.usp.br/events/the-institutions-of-capitalism/).
